From Haute Couture To Heavenly Bodies

The Met Gala: A History of Themes

From "Haute Couture" to "Heavenly Bodies"

Since its inception in 1995, the Met Gala has become one of the most anticipated events in the fashion world. Each year, the event is organized around a specific theme, which serves as inspiration for the attendees' outfits. Over the years, these themes have ranged from historical periods to contemporary art movements.

In 1995, the first-ever Met Gala was held with the theme "Haute Couture." The event celebrated the work of legendary designers such as Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy. Since then, the Met Gala has featured themes as diverse as "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years" (1996), "China: Through the Looking Glass" (2015), and "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" (2018).

The Met Gala is not only a glamorous event but also a significant fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. In recent years, the event has raised millions of dollars to support the Institute's exhibitions and educational programs.
